Romantic Proposal Ideas from Sophia and Devon’s Surprise Engagement at Mount Hood

This surprise proposal felt like stepping into a dream. A moody forest atmosphere, complete with a waterfall (thank you, Mount Hood), soft natural lighting, and the kind of effortless romance that you wait your whole life for, was just some of the elements that made Sophia and Devon’s engagement absolutely stunning, and it’s bringing all the best romantic proposal ideas.

Romantic Proposal Ideas

There are a few key things you need to make a proposal feel truly romantic and special: intentionality, meaning, and something that tells your story. And these romantic proposal ideas are full of all of those things.

Keep it Intimate and Private

The best way to leave room for connection, romance, and raw, heartfelt emotion is to keep it intimate. This is a moment for just the two of you to soak everything in, to take the first step of choosing each other forever. Having just the two of you there (and your photographer, wink wink) makes for the most special moments. The ones that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Make it Fun

A romantic proposal doesn’t always have to mean flowers and candlelight. You can always incorporate things that you two love doing as a couple to make it feel more like you, especially if you’re more of a fun-loving couple. Here are a few ideas to make it a bit more vibrant:

  • Plan a surprise engagement party to celebrate with your favorite people afterwards.

  • Propose at a frequent date spot. This ensures that it’s somewhere you’re already comfortable, doing something you love, and it helps keep it a surprise because it just feels like a regular date night.

  • Propose in a photo booth to get a photo strip you’ll cherish forever.

  • Decorate the space with some of your partner’s favorite things, favorite colors, or just something that screams the two of you. This could be rose petals and candles everywhere, or it could be huge floral installations, a picnic, or photos of you two hanging all over.

  • Pop the question on an adventure, whether it’s a Ferris Wheel, a boat, or a hike.

Take a Trip

A proposal during a trip naturally creates space for connection and presence. When you two are away from home and all the noise, alone on a romantic getaway? That’s the prime time to pop the question. It’s something that will make your trip truly unforgettable.

Bonus tip: Plan a trip somewhere your partner has always wanted to go or a place that has special meaning to you two. Maybe it’s where you took your first trip together or a dream destination you’ve always talked about visiting.

As long as the place tells your story, you can’t go wrong.

Incorporate What Your Partner Loves

Plan your whole surprise proposal around what they love. If there are locations, hobbies, or interests that mean a lot to them, find a unique way to bring elements of them in somehow to show that there was a ton of thought and meaning put into this.

For example, if your partner loves Christmas, you could propose while you’re Christmas tree shopping together!

Capture the Moment

Getting engaged is a milestone moment, and that’s something that deserves to be captured for you to look back on forever. The raw emotions of a surprise proposal have so much feeling, you’ll be forever grateful you captured those unposed reactions.

So, whether we’re planning a “photoshoot” for you to surprise-pop the question or I’m hiding in the bushes, giving you two a sweet, romantic moment alone, I’m there, capturing every laugh, every tear, and every “I can’t believe it” moment. And yes, I’m definitely shedding a tear for you behind the camera.

Tips for Planning a Surprise Proposal

As a destination engagement photographer who has the honor of capturing a lot of surprise proposals, I have some tricks up my sleeve that will make it way easier to plan out:

  • Plan it for you, not for social media

This is a day that’s for you two, and you two only. Don’t worry about everything being picture-perfect. As long as it feels true to who you are as a couple, and you’re focusing on what really matters, it’ll turn out beautifully.

  • Keep it a secret

Recruit some of your partner’s friends who can be in on it and help you with the small things, like if your partner needs to go get nails painted beforehand.

My top tip? Try not to be suspicious or hint towards it at all. The real surprise with the raw emotions is unforgettable, and seriously, one of the best feelings in the world.

  • Hire a photographer who will help you every step of the way

As your photographer, I’m here to help you. Whether it’s scouting the perfect location, making sure there are no people around, or helping you plan exactly how to ask the question, I’m here for you. I’ll help you all the way leading up to it, and then make the camera disappear so you won’t even know I’m there. You don’t have to plan it all alone!

  • Tie it back to you

Emotional proposals create timeless galleries, and each element is part of the story. How comfortable you two feel in the location, the way the light frames the two of you during the most important question of your life, and the unposed, unplanned moments are the things that will make your gallery meaningful and cinematic.

Sophia and Devon’s Mount Hood Engagement

Sophia and Devon are the sweetest, and their love is so natural and easy to capture. Devon reached out to me for us to create the perfect proposal plan for him to surprise Sophia, which looked like Sophia thinking this was a regular couple’s session.

I got them in position on the rock and told Sophia that Devon was going to grab her from behind, then told her to turn around because of the lighting, and when she did, he was down on one knee, ready to pop the question.

And the look on her face? It said it all.

Pure joy, pure shock, pure excitement.

Her step back in shock, her hand to her face, and the tears that came after were all a part of the story, and those are now memories Sophia in Devon have frozen in time, to look back on forever.

And that’s why I do what I do.

Don’t even get me started on the engagement photos we got afterwards. They’re the definition of moody romance, where these two were surrounded beautifully by moss, rocks, and a waterfall backdrop.

Sophia and Devon’s engagement couldn’t have gone more perfectly or been more them. A location that did all the work and let them breathe, paired with a true surprise and an adventure that they’ll never forget, was all part of their story, and I am still so in awe of it all! Getting to capture the way they held each other and their small, loving glances towards each other, all while letting the story lead, was such an honor.
